The Festival

This June, join the Toronto International Festival of Authors for the fifth edition of the MOTIVE Crime & Mystery Festival! Explore an expansive and riveting programme featuring more than 55 events, author talks, masterclasses and immersive workshops designed to captivate true crime and mystery lovers. 

From cozy crime and police procedural to psychological thriller and true crime, explore and celebrate the genre that has inspired some of the world’s most compelling stories and beloved characters. 

International guests include Clare Mackintosh, the former U.K. police officer and author of 11 novels including the #1 international bestsellers I Let You Go, I See You, and Let Me Lie. 

Nicholas Shakespeare, whose body of work as an author and biographer includes Ian Fleming: The Complete Manwill lead a fascinating re-examination of the works of literary icon Graham Greene. 

This year, we're shining the spotlight on the exciting world of French crime writing, featuring major voices such as Hannelore Cayre, Olivier Norek, Sophie Hénaff, and Johana Gustawsson.

MOTIVE proudly showcases an outstanding roster of Canadian talent including Shari Lapena, Nita Prose, Maureen Jennings, Robyn Harding, Genevieve Graham, Karma Brown, Uzma Jalaluddin, Hannah Mary McKinnon, Roz NaySharon Bala, and many more.


Passes

With our Pass system, you can access multiple events on a particular day, or for the entire Festival, for one accessible price. Wander the picturesque halls of Victoria College, discover new authors, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow readers and writers in our festive atmosphere.

Some events are included with Passes but due to limited capacity, require pre-registration. Add these events to your cart as you check out to reserve your spot.

Box Office

The on-site MOTIVE Box Office will be located in the lobby of Victoria College and open during Festival hours.

After purchasing your pass online, you'll receive a QR code. Present it at the Box Office in person to get your festival badge, which grants access to all standard events.

Some events are included with Passes, but require pre-registration. As you select your passes, add Meditative Morning Yoga, or a University of Toronto Forensics Workshop to your itinerary before you check out.

The Motive Murder Mystery Dinner and Masterclasses are ticketed separately and not included in passes. For these events, present your QR code for entry at the door.
